PM Surya Ghar subsidy for home solar in Mohali and Punjab

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana provides central financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 for residential rooftop solar. Claiming it involves a portal application, a PSPCL feasibility check, an inspection and a net meter, completed in sequence. We confirm your eligibility before any commitment is made and manage each step until the subsidy is credited to your bank account.

How much is the subsidy?

The central government pays ₹30,000 for each of the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third. Nothing is added after 3 kW, so a 5 kW system gets the same ₹78,000 as a 3 kW one.

Two points are important for budgeting. The subsidy is credited to your bank account after the system is commissioned and the net meter is installed, so the full project cost is payable first. It is also a fixed amount and does not increase with the price of the equipment selected.

These are the amounts published for the scheme at the time of writing. They can change, so check the official portal before you apply.

System sizeSubsidy
1 kW₹30,000
2 kW₹60,000
3 kW or more₹78,000

Who can get it

  • You own the house and have a roof to put panels on. The scheme is for homes. Shops, offices and factories are not covered.
  • You have a domestic PSPCL connection in your name. If the connection is in the name of a parent or previous owner, it should be transferred first. Name mismatches are a common cause of delay.
  • You haven't taken a solar subsidy before on the same connection.
  • The system is grid-connected and uses approved equipment. That means Indian-made panels that meet the scheme's rules, often called DCR panels, and an approved inverter.
  • It is installed through a vendor registered on the national portal.

Check if I'm eligible

The process, from application to disbursement

  1. Register

You register on the national portal with your PSPCL consumer number and mobile number.

  2. Apply

The rooftop solar application goes in, and PSPCL checks that your connection can take the system.

  3. Install

Once PSPCL approves, the system is installed through a registered vendor with approved equipment.

  4. Net meter

PSPCL inspects the installation and fits the net meter.

  5. Subsidy

After the commissioning report, you enter your bank details on the portal and the subsidy is paid into your account.

This follows the process described on the national portal. Steps and documents can change, so we confirm them for your case.

Our role and your documents

  • Eligibility and sanctioned-load check before any payment
  • Preparation of the portal application and PSPCL feasibility request
  • Follow-up on the inspection and net-meter installation
  • Commissioning documents required for the subsidy claim

We require a recent electricity bill, your Aadhaar and the bank account to which the subsidy should be credited. The portal sends OTPs to your registered mobile number, so you will need to be available to confirm them.

PM Surya Ghar and Punjab's 300 free units are two different things

The two are frequently confused. "Muft Bijli" in the name of the central scheme refers to the power generated by your own panels. The scheme provides a one-time subsidy on the system and does not provide free units from PSPCL.

The 300 free units a month come from the Punjab government and apply to every domestic PSPCL connection, with or without solar. A household can benefit from both. How the two interact is explained on the home page.

Financing: the PM Surya Ghar loan

Because the subsidy is credited after installation, some households choose to finance the project. Several public sector banks offer a PM Surya Ghar loan of up to ₹2 lakh without collateral for systems up to 3 kW, at an interest rate linked to the RBI's repo rate. You apply through the national portal or the Jan Samarth portal after registering.

Interest rate, documentation and approval are determined by the bank, and current terms should be confirmed with it. We provide the quotation and technical documents the bank requires.

Areas covered for subsidy projects

Mohali (including Aerocity and IT City), Zirakpur, Kharar and New Chandigarh. These are all on PSPCL.

Coming soon Chandigarh and Panchkula. Each has its own electricity department and approval process, which we are in the process of setting up. Non-subsidy projects are already undertaken in both.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the subsidy take to come?

The claim can only be made after PSPCL has fitted the net meter and the commissioning report is on the portal. After that, payment is usually a matter of weeks. The slow part is normally the inspection and the net meter, which run on PSPCL's timelines. We follow up throughout, although the timeline is set by the department.

Can I get the subsidy on a 5 kW or 10 kW system?

Yes. The subsidy is calculated on the first 3 kW only, so you receive ₹78,000 whether the system is 3 kW or 10 kW. Your sanctioned load also has to be high enough for the size you want.

Is there a subsidy for shops, clinics or offices?

No. PM Surya Ghar is for homes on a domestic connection. A business saves through lower day-time bills and tax depreciation. See commercial rooftop solar.

Do I have to go through a registered vendor?

Yes. The subsidy is only paid for systems installed through a vendor registered on the national portal. Subsidy projects are executed through a registered vendor, whose name appears on the application. Maya Green Power remains your point of contact throughout.

Do subsidy panels cost more?

Usually a little. The scheme requires Indian-made panels that meet its rules, and these tend to cost more than the imported-cell panels used on non-subsidy jobs. Your proposal shows the price net of subsidy, to allow a like-for-like comparison.
