Estimate what rooftop solar would save on your electricity bill, what a system typically costs, and how long it takes to pay back. The estimate uses your electricity company's 2026-27 rates and shows every assumption.
Your estimate
Choose home or business and where the property is, then enter your monthly bill or the units on it. Open the extra options for your sanctioned load and category.
Estimates use energy charges at 2026-27 rates, before fixed charges and duty, and 3.6 to 4.2 units per kW a day. Prices are typical installed ranges including GST, not a quote. Subsidy and price figures checked 12 October 2026.
When will solar pay for itself?
The figures from your estimate above are filled in. If you have a quotation, enter its price and the saving it shows, and see the month your money comes back.
Assumes today's electricity rates for the whole period, so if rates go up your money comes back sooner. Panel output is taken to fall by 0.5% a year. Repairs after the warranty period and the cost of borrowing, if you take a loan, are not included. This is an estimate, not a quote.
How the estimate is worked out
Three steps, using your electricity company's own rates. Every figure behind them is listed below with its source.
1 Units
Units you use−Units your panels make=Units you still take from the grid
2 Saving
Your bill today−Bill on the units still taken=Your saving
3 Payback
Price−Subsidy÷Saving a year=Years to pay back
Electricity rates
2026-27 tariff orders
Energy charges for 2026-27 from each tariff order: PSPCL (PSERC order of 6 March 2026), Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd (JERC multi-year tariff order) and UHBVN (tariff schedule for 2026-27, from HERC's order of 25 March 2026). Fixed charges, electricity duty and fuel adjustments are left out, so the saving shown is slightly lower than you would see on your bill.
Punjab's free electricity
300 free units a month
Under the Government of Punjab letter of 4 March 2026, homes get 300 free units a month (600 per two-month bill). General-category homes that go over pay for every unit; SC, BC, BPL and freedom-fighter homes pay only for units above 300. With net metering, the limit applies to the units you take from the grid after solar.
Generation
3.6 to 4.2 units per kW a day
Across the year in Tricity, for a shade-free, south-facing roof. Summer days produce more, winter days less.
Price
₹52,000 to ₹66,000 per kW
A typical 2026 installed price including GST: about ₹52,000 to ₹66,000 per kW for a home system with the Indian-made panels the subsidy requires, and about ₹45,000 to ₹60,000 per kW for a 10 to 50 kW business system. This is a market range, not our quotation. A firm price follows a site survey.
Subsidy
Up to ₹78,000 for homes
PM Surya Ghar pays ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third, up to ₹78,000, for eligible homes using a registered vendor. Businesses do not qualify. We currently handle subsidy applications for homes on the Punjab side.
Units sent to the grid
Not counted as saving
Surplus units credited under net metering are not counted as savings, so a system larger than your use does not improve the result.
DCR or non-DCR panels
The cheaper route is used, switching at about 9 kW
The subsidy needs DCR panels, made with Indian cells, which cost about ₹9,000 a kW more. Up to about 8 kW, DCR panels with the subsidy cost less overall. From about 9 kW, the extra DCR cost is more than the ₹78,000 subsidy, so the estimate uses non-DCR panels without the subsidy, at about ₹43,000 to ₹57,000 per kW. Homes that give up the subsidy can use non-DCR panels until 31 March 2027. Business systems commissioned after 31 December 2026 need Indian-cell panels, which is likely to add about ₹9,000 a kW. See when the subsidy is worth taking.
Rates and scheme details were checked on 3 October 2026, prices on 8 October 2026, and panel rules and the DCR price gap on 12 October 2026. They change over time. Your proposal states the figures it uses.
Questions about the calculator
Why does the calculator ask where the property is?
Mohali, Zirakpur, Kharar and New Chandigarh are supplied by PSPCL, Chandigarh by Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd, and Panchkula by UHBVN. Each has its own rates, and Punjab also gives homes 300 free units a month, so the same system saves different amounts in each place.
Why does solar save little for some Punjab homes?
A home that uses 300 units a month or less already pays nothing for energy in Punjab. Solar only saves money when use goes above that level, which is common in summer with air conditioning. For those homes, a system just large enough to bring net use back within 300 units usually pays back fastest.
Is the price shown a quotation?
No. It is a typical market range for 2026. Your firm price depends on the roof, the mounting structure, cable lengths and the equipment you choose, and is given in writing after a site survey.
Does the payback include the subsidy?
Yes, for homes, wherever the subsidy is the cheaper route. The subsidy is deducted from the price before payback is worked out, on the assumption that the home is eligible. From about 9 kW, the estimate uses non-DCR panels without the subsidy instead, because that costs less. Business systems do not receive the subsidy, but they can usually claim depreciation on the plant, which your accountant can confirm.
Book a free site survey
Leave your name, number and area. What happens next:
We call or WhatsApp you, normally within one working day, with an indicative system size and saving. If solar is not worth it for you, we say so.
We survey your roof for free: the area, shading, the structure it needs, the meter and the wiring. You commit to nothing before this visit.
You get a written proposal: the system size, every component by make and model, the warranties, the timeline and a savings range.
